HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Alyssa Mercado fired a 2-under 70 to lead the Troy women's golf team in Monday's opening round of the Huntsville.org Intercollegiate hosted by Samford at the RTJ at Hampton Grove Highlands Course. The Trojans are in third place, just a shot out of second and nine shots off the pace, while Mercado is tied for second.

Mercado's 70 is a season-low and her team-leading third round under par this year. She raced out to 3-under with birdies on the second, seventh and ninth before her lone blemish of the day, a bogey on the par-4 13^th. Mercado is three shots back of Lipscomb's Lauren Thompson for the individual lead.

Troy shot 9-over as a unit to finish the first of three days on the course in third place. Lipscomb shot even on the day to enter the clubhouse with the team lead, while Oakland is in second place at 8-over. The Trojans paced the field, shooting 1-over on the par-3 offerings and their 64 pars were the most in the 16-team field, as Mercado, Laura Fangmeyer and Manya Saini ranked in the top five individually in pars.

Saini carded a birdie on the par-5 ninth – one of three Trojans to go into the red on the final hole before the turn, as she shot 75 on the day to finish the round tied for 15^th place.

Katelynn Altese and Bruna Roqueta each had one birdie in their round of 76 and find themselves tied for 23^rdplace, while Fangmeyer wrapped her day tied for 45^th place at 6-over.

Teams will play the second round tomorrow beginning at 8 a.m.
