TROY, Ala. – A week of accolades that included NCBWA Preseason All-Amercian Team and All-Sun Belt First Team continues for Shane Lewis as he adds Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List, USA Baseball announced Friday afternoon.
"Shane is a superstar player and kid," head coach Skylar Meade said. "He deserves all the national love he received last year and into the preseason. However, we know that Shane is focused solely on working hard, being a great teammate and winning as many games as possible in 2024."
Lewis joins 54 players from around the nation across high school and collegiate baseball. Of the 55-player list, No. 2 is one of just two players in the Sun Belt Conference (Derek Bender – Coastal Carolina). The Golden Spikes Advisory Board will maintain the award's watch list on a rolling basis, allowing athletes to play themselves into consideration for the award based on in-season performance.
A junior from Vicksburg, Miss., Lewis slugged his way into the history books as he blasted a program-record 27 home runs during his first season with the Trojans. His 27 home runs broke Jorge Soto's single-season record (26) that stood since 1999. Additionally, Lewis finished second on Troy's single-season list with 77 RBIs and eighth with 153 total bases.
Named the Sun Belt Player and Newcomer of the Year in 2023, Lewis was a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy in addition to earning ABCA/Rawling All-America honors and first-team all-region distinction. Lewis hit at a .286 clip with a .436 on-base percentage to accompany his record-breaking power to both sides. Lewis ranked fourth nationally with 27 home runs while checking in 13th in RBIs.
Lewis and the Trojans open their 2024 campaign with a four-game series against SIU-Edwardsville from Feb. 16-18 at Riddle-Pace Field.
