Things to Clean Up
The Trojans' six-game winning streak came to an end on Thursday night as it struggled to slow down Arkansas State's second-half offensive eruption. Troy was up seven at the halftime break but went cold from the field in the final 20 minutes while the Red Wolves caught fire.
It was a messy evening for the Trojans, who turned it over 14 times and had just seven assists. Arkansas State took advantage of those mistakes and outscored Troy 16-8 on points off turnovers.
For just the seventh time this season, Troy lost the rebounding battle. The Red Wolves outrebounded the Trojans 43-35, which led to 33 second-chance points for Arkansas State compared to just 11 for Troy. The Trojans move to 3-4 (2-2 SBC) when the opponent has more rebounds.
Things to Build On
Despite the loss, Troy shot the ball well from the charity stripe, as it knocked down 12 of its 15 free-throw attempts (80 percent). The Trojans are now 12-6 (9-1 SBC) this season when shooting over 70 percent from the free-throw line.
Jackson Fields continued to have a strong presence in the paint as he recorded three blocks and had five rebounds. Thomas Dowd led the way with nine rebounds. In four of the last five games, Dowd has recorded seven or more rebounds and leads the team with 5.7 rebounds per game.
Offensively, Muhammad had an impressive 22-point performance. The Trojans will continue to need the senior guard out of New Mexico to put up big numbers on the stat sheet down the stretch and in the conference tournament.
Myles Rigsby also had his seventh consecutive game in double-figure scoring after putting up 12 points. The freshman is second on the team in scoring with 11.5 points.
Scouting ULM
The Warhawks enter Saturday's matchup on a three-game winning streak and have won each of its last two conference games. ULM handed Southern Miss its first-ever home loss as a member of the Sun Belt Conference on Thursday night in Hattiesburg, Miss.
