Tai'Sheka Porchia's 25-point, 7-rebound performance led the charge for Troy's seventh straight victory and placed it at .500 in Trojan Arena, 77-70, over Southern Miss.
Sharonica Hartsfield's six points in the final 2:31, combined with a bucket by Ja'Mia Hollings – finished with a 12-point, 15-rebound double-double – gave Troy the 16-9 lead to end the first. The final 30 minutes saw both sides battle via the free throw game and on the defensive end, combining for 53 free throw attempts (43 makes) and limiting each other to 35.8 percent from the field.
A critical triple from Makayia Hallmon, an and-one from Porchia, two clutch free throws from Hartsfield and the game-sealing turnover by USM with 0:26 on the clock would be the difference for Troy in the final minutes.
January has been a month to remember for Porchia, Hallmon and Hollings, as the Trojans are one game from a perfect 8-0. Porchia's 25 points on Thursday jumped her to 17.3 points per game, while Hallmon sticks in second at 16. Meanwhile, Hollings is 0.1 rebound from averaging a double-double with 12.7 points and 9.9 rebounds.
Arkansas State Awareness
Arkansas State currently rides its longest SBC road trip of the season, defeating South Alabama and Texas State before falling to ULM on Thursday, 84-76. Lauryn Pendleton and Cheyenne Forney had 16 points, but ULM's 13 made triples proved too much.
The team's leading scorer, Izzy Higginbottom, averaged 21.5 points through 18 games on 48.6 percent shooting. She also sits as the team's leading 3-point threat, converting 1.7 per game on 44.9 percent. Add in a 90.8 free throw percentage and the 5-7 junior remains an elite offensive force.
Forney's seen the largest uptick in production since SBC play started, rising from 6.5 points to 9.0 on 69 percent shooting. She's also among six Red Wolves to average 4-plus rebounds at 5.0. Arkansas State averages 36.9 rebounds as a unit to rank third in rebound margin at +3.6.
