Women’s Basketball Hosts Southern Miss on Thursday

TROY, Ala. – With six straight wins and seven on its mind, Troy women's basketball prepares to battle Southern Miss in Trojan Arena at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
A clean road sweep against Louisiana and Texas State has the Trojans (9-8, 6-1 SBC) sitting above .500 for the first time in 2023-24 while searching for its first-ever win against Southern Miss (9-8, 2-5 SBC) – sit 0-5 in all-time matchups.

Clean Sweep
The Trojans moved to .500 on the road with their fourth straight road victory on Saturday with wins against Texas State, 92-85, and Louisiana, 65-57. The four straight marks the longest road win streak for the Trojans since they won five from Jan. 27 to Feb. 26 in 2022.
Tai'Sheka Porchia shined for Troy with 17.5 points on 68.2 percent shooting, followed by Nia Daniel at 16 due to her heroics against Louisiana. Shaulana Wagner led the team in rebounds as a guard after her first double-digit rebound performance against Texas State, seizing 7.5 through the weekend.
Thursday's matchup in San Marcos against Texas State needed five players to end in double-figures to outlast for a 92-75 win. Ja'Mia Hollings led the team with 18 points, followed by Porchia (16), Zay Dyer (15), Makayia Hallmon (14) and Leilani Augmon (12). The Trojans were lights out in the first quarter, shooting 66.7 percent to hold a 33-21 lead that lasted them until the final buzzer.
Louisiana came out of the gates strong in the first half on Saturday, looking to avenge the 46-point loss to Troy from 10 days prior. When the buzzer rang to end the first half, Troy found itself down 33-26 despite shooting 41.3 percent from the field. However, the second half saw heroics from Daniel as she finished with 23 points, seven rebounds and four assists to complete the second-half comeback.
Scouting Southern Miss
After back-to-back wins in the SBC, Southern Miss comes off a 70-58 loss at the hands of ULM Saturday afternoon as the team shot 35.6 percent from the field and 11.1 from deep. Melyia Grayson looked primed for a breakout game with 10 points and five rebounds until she fouled out in just 16 minutes.
Since conference play started, Dominque Davis has shined for the Golden Eagles as the leading scorer in the Sun Belt with 22.1 points. The 5-6 guard also sits third overall with 21.5 points on the sixth-best shooting percentage of 47.6. Grayson joins Davis in double-digits with 16.1 points on 55.3 percent while leading the team in rebounds at nine.
Southern Miss leads the Sun Belt Conference as the most efficient shooters at 44 percent, which also ranks 69th in the nation. They also don't allow the opposing team free shots at the charity stripe with the second-fewest fouls in the league (53rd in the country), averaging 16.2 while simultaneously shooting the second-best free throw percentage at 75.5 percent.
Six Straight
• The Sun Belt announced the second round of games for the MAC-SBC challenge on Monday afternoon. Thus, the Trojans head north on Saturday, Feb. 10, to face Bowling Green.
• With an 0-5 record against Southern Miss, Troy looks to win its first-ever matchup. If they win on Thursday, Troy and Chanda Rigby would have defeated every team in the SBC at least once in program history except for Old Dominion – play Old Dominion on Feb. 7.
