Troy Volleyball Splits Claims First Win of the Season in Split Double Header
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Troy dropped the first game of a doubleheader to later claim its first win of the season Friday evening.
Troy (1-6) lost its first game of the day against Western Kentucky (5-3), to come back and win against College of Charleston (3-7).
Tori Hester posted 28 kills from the two games she played today, with 19 coming from the game against the College of Charleston. Julia Brooks came in a close second with 22 kills from the two-game series.
Western Kentucky
WKU took the lead early and didn't look back, going on a 4-0 scoring run, 11-5. A kill from Julia Brooks brought the Trojan offense to double digits at 19-10. Sophie Sparks slammed two consecutive kills down to get the score to 24-16 before WKU won the set 25-16.
The Trojans and Lady Tree Toppers traded points until the Lady Tree Toppers pulled away at the 15-13 mark from Trojan errors. Hester slammed one down to keep the Trojans within three, 17-14. Western Kentucky kept their momentum to close the set 25-20.
Hester ignited the Trojan offense in set two by slamming two down early 2-2. From there, WKU went on a 4-0 run to take the score to 10-6. Troy battled back within two with a kill from Julia Brooks 13-11. The Lady Toppers took another 4-0 run to make the score 20-13 before taking the set at 25-16.
College of Charleston
Troy and Charleston started trading points until the Trojans took the lead with two blocks, then a kill from Tori Hester, 12-9. The Trojan offense went on a 4-0 run to get the score to 16-11. The Cougars chipped away to bring the score to 18-18. The Cougars and Trojans battled until Amiah Butler slammed down the final point of the set, 25-23.
Set two had the Trojans jump to an early 5-1 lead with three kills from Tori Hester. The Cougars were able to claw back to bring it within two, 7-5. Throwing up a block, Audrey Worthington extended Troy's lead to 11-8. Brooks tallied two blocks on the net and slammed one down, 19-14. Troy wrapped up the set with a 4-0 scoring run to bring the set to a close 25-14.
The Trojans started with a 5-0 run with kills from Hester and Brooks and an ace from Jaci Mesa, 5-0. Capitalizing on Trojan errors and three aces, the Cougars were able to tie it up at 13-13. Charleston went a 5-0 run to take the lead with three consecutive kills from Sofie Vogel, 17-13. The Trojans brought it within four with an ace from Caroline Darracott, 21-17. Julia Brooks slammed one down to get the score to 18-23 before Charleston finished the set 25-18.
Charleston and Troy traded points early in the final set, 3-3. Troy went on a 4-0 scoring run with three kills and a block, all from Julia Brooks, to give the Trojans a five-point lead, 8-3. Troy was able to continue to build a lead 15-7. The Cougars clawed back within two from consecutive kills, 16-14. Troy went on a 3-0 scoring run to win the final set, 25-17
