Led by a record-setting aerial attack and a defense that recorded four shutouts, the Red Wave claimed the 1969 NAIA National Championship with a 43-35 victory over Texas A&I in the Cramton Bowl (Montgomery, Ala.).
The Red Wave advanced to the title game with a 63-10 victory over Willamette (Ore.) in the semifinals. Sim Byrd threw for six touchdowns, while his backup, Al Heard, threw two. In the national title game, Byrd connected on 25-of-44 passes and threw five touchdowns en route to Most Valuable Back honors as the Red Wave cruised past Texas A&I.
The 1973 Trojans rolled off six straight wins after a season-opening tie en route to a 7-2-1 regular season record and 6-1 mark in the Gulf South Conference. The conference title was the program's second Gulf South championship in three years.
Troy Sports Hall of Fame inductee Mark King earned the first of his two All-America honors, while Dennis Anderson and Johnny Grimes earned first team all-conference honors.
Troy's third straight Sun Belt title under legendary head coach Larry Blakeney came in 2008 after the Trojans won three straight league games to close out the season with a 6-1 mark in the Sun Belt. Playing a schedule stacked with three Power 5 opponents – LSU, Ohio State and Oklahoma State – Troy finished 8-5 on the season and earned the program's second New Orleans Bowl berth.
Levi Brown was named the Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year after passing for 2,030 yards and 15 touchdowns, while eight Trojans earned first team All-Sun Belt honors.
