Nine Athletes Earn Academic All-District for Track & Field

TROY, Ala. – Nine players, five on the women's team (Abby Grosinske, Tanner Guest, Maya Kelly, Lauren Locke, Summer Williams) and four on the men (Mason Bennett, James Brake, Gabriel Peacock, Nash Rutledge) for Troy track & field / cross country were announced Wednesday as members of the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Teams.
"Congratulations are in order for these nine student-athletes," director of track & field / cross country Marc Davis said. "All nine are deserving as they are the benchmark for academic success here at Troy. They will be great successes in the real world moving forward. All of their efforts have been greatly appreciated."
The CSC Academic All‐America program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA. Academic All‐District honorees advance to the CSC Academic All‐America ballot. Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First, second and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced June 28 (women) and June 29 (men). The CSC Academic All-District® teams include the student-athletes listed at the links above.
Bennett, who received a Sun Belt Conference Postgraduate Scholarship, led the charge via GPA with a perfect 4.0 in general management after graduating this past May with his masters. In addition, the senior holds the top mark in the 3,000m and 10,000m runs at 9:06.03 and 33:12.47, respectively.
From Florence, Ala., Brake joined Bennett in graduating in May with a 3.61 in global business – risk management insurance. He held the top four marks for Troy in the 1,500m on four top 10 finishes. He also joined the 4x800m relay at the Tiger Track Classic for fourth at 7:55.19.
With another perfect GPA of 4.0, Peacock received his degree in Computer Science. He did this while competing in the 400m, 800m, 4x400m, 4x800m and sprint medley relay. His highlight of the 2023 season came with his first gold medal in the 800m when he came across the finish line at 1:55.48 at the Weems Baskin Invitational.
The final member on the men's side was Rutledge, who received his degree in HSTM – sports management with a GPA of 3.58. His primary event was shot put, where he claimed top 15 finishes in 4-of-5 meets he competed in. In addition, he set a personal best of 14.18m at the SBC Championships for 15th.
On the women's side, Grosinske held a 3.92 in exercise science – pre-health. On the field, she finished in the top 10 in 5-of-6 shot put events she competed in for indoor and 7-of-12 in overall events for outdoor. A second-place finish with a mark of 45.27m at the UAB Spring Invite was the top result in her junior season.
Guest graduated with a degree in elementary education with a GPA of 3.66 in May. In her senior season, she held the top time for indoor in the 800m at 2:15.89 at the Carolina Challenge for fifth and 1,000m at 3:01.44 for second at the Camel City Invite. In outdoor, she earned two gold medals in the 800m and 1,500m events at the Tiger Track Classic and South Florida Invitational, respectively.
A native of Beaumont, Texas, Kelly earned gold during the indoor season alongside her fellow Trojans at the Camel City Invite with a time of 3:51.23 in the 4x400m relay before doing it again in the 4x100m relay at the Tiger Track Classic. She finished her degree in kinesiology – exercise science with a GPA of 3.54.
A new graduate of Troy with a 4.0 in biology / biomedical sciences, Locke competed in the one mile and 3,000m for indoor and 800m, 1,500m and 3,000m steeplechase for outdoor. Her primary event was the steeplechase, where she claimed two podium finishes with a personal best of 10:50.76 at the South Florida Invitational.
The final member of the team is Williams, who graduated in May with a degree in Nursing – BSN with a 3.62 GPA. She claimed one top 10 in the indoor season with a time of 19:38.16 at the Carolina Challenge for sixth in the 5,000m. For outdoor, she claimed one podium finish of third at the UAB Spring Invite for 18:50.83 for the 5,000m.
