Men's Tennis, Mario Martinez Ranked in ITA Southern Region

TROY, Ala. – Coming off a third straight Sun Belt Tournament semifinals appearance, the Troy men's tennis team finished the season ranked No. 10 in the ITA Southern Region, while freshman Mario Martinez Serrano was the No. 19 ranked singles player.

Troy finished the season 18-7 en route to its semifinal appearance in the tournament. The Trojans won nine straight matches at one point of the season and 13 of their first 15 to open the year. Head coach Rolando Vargas led his club to three consecutive wins to end the regular season before knocking off Georgia Southern in the Sun Belt Tournament.Â

Martinez, who earned Sun Belt Freshman of the Year and Player to Watch honors, was earlier named the Southern Regional Rookie of the Year and was the second-highest-rated singles player outside of SEC players.

Martinez led the Sun Belt with 20 wins during his freshman season as he posted a 20-3 record in dual matches, with 19 of the 20 victories coming on court one. Additionally, Martinez went 6-1 in Sun Belt matches and was one of just two players in the league with winning percentages over .800.

In the fall, he won the Mercer Gridiron Classic and advanced to the round of 32 at the ITA Southern Regional before a three-set loss to the nation's No. 9 player.
