TAMPA, Fla. – Through two days at the South Florida Invitational at the USF Track & Field Stadium, Troy track & field dominated, with 22 competitors finishing at the podium; seven in first place.
The gold medal was never in doubt as four women in Biniosa Ezukuse, Lauren Locke, Tanner Guest and Shanyah Washington, claimed victories in their respective events. Meanwhile, Jasai Taylor and Morgan Reese claimed victories on the men's side. The event's overall winner for Troy was Javon Osbourne, who finished atop the leaderboards in both men's shot put and discus.
Osbourne had a perfect day in Tampa, competing in his primary events. In discus, he was member of flight two, where he and Anthony Symile went against each other for first place. In the end, Symile ended with a 51.65m throw, while Osbourne hit the 58.47m mark to dominate the field. He followed it in the shot put event, again going against Symile. And once again, the sophomore was the class of the field, peaking in his last throw of 17.49m. Symile ended in third at 15.78m and Tristan Boatman joined them in the top five at 15.09m.
The men continued their scourge on the throwing event as Reese led a trio of Trojans to sweep the podium. On his fifth throw, the junior launched to the 56.27m mark to edge out Symile in second (52.19m) and Boatman in third (44.80m).
Taylor got the victory on the track side for the men in the 400m hurdles. A member of heat one, the freshman faced the best of the event and came across the stripe at 53.78 – 0.29 seconds ahead of Da'Quon King from Bethune-Cookman.
On the women's side, Washington stood above the rest with a first and third in 100m events. Alone, Washington took care of business in the 100m dash, outpacing Halutie Hor of Coppin State by 0.10 seconds to win heat one and event at 11.56. Then, she joined her teammates, Naveyh Frost, Kierra Montgomery and Maya Kelly and when the race ended, they grabbed third with a time of 45.45.
Locke and Guest topped the charts in the 3000m steeplechase and 1500m, respectively. Locke didn't give her competitors a chance, winning the race by just under six seconds for a time of 10:50.76. It was a similar story for Guest when she dominated heat one by over three seconds and ended at 4:33.16.
Lastly, Ezukuse grabbed another win in the shot put event. A member of flight two, the junior grabbed her best throw on the fifth attempt to clear the field at the 15.16m mark. She was the only competitor in the event to surpass the 15m mark – next closest was Alana Lecointe at 14.42m.
Troy returns to Alabama for a couple of weeks, starting with the Samford Invite in Birmingham on April 14.
