Football Wraps Compacted Week with Scrimmage

TROY, Ala. – Troy head coach Jon Sumrall presented his team with some adversity this week with a last-minute schedule change that had the Trojans practice on three consecutive days, something uncommon in the spring.
"We were smart and went pretty hard on Tuesday and yesterday pulled back a little bit in just helmets," Sumrall said. "I thought they got good work in this week and kept moving things forward and progressing, and I liked their mindset this week."
The Trojans have just two practices left – Tuesday evening and Thursday morning – before next Saturday's T-Day in The Vet at 2 p.m. However, watching Troy work each day, you would assume it was a mid-October practice and not one featuring 28 players with the crispness and efficiency on display.
"We've got all the situation work in that you want," Sumrall said. "Situationally were so much further ahead of where we were a year ago. A year ago, this time, I was just trying to function at the line of scrimmage offensively; now we look like a team that has been coached before and been in a lot of situations."
Despite practice starting at 8 a.m., Thursday's scrimmage had the feel of a primetime game in the fall with the level of intensity on both sides of the ball.
"Back to the physicality and the toughness piece today," Sumrall said. "I thought the offense started a little bit slower than they have this spring, and the defense played well when we put the ball down in the open field. A lot of give and take, which is exciting. You don't want to see one side dominate the whole thing. Last year it felt like some days the defense wouldn't give the offense an inch, which was great, but it's more fun now because we're more complete as a team."
