TROY, Ala. – After earning Sun Belt Player of the week and being named National Player of the week by Collegiate Baseball, outfielder Shane Lewis has picked up another award from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. The NCBWA Tuesday announced Lewis had won the Dick Howser Trophy National Hitter of the Week presented by The Game Headwear for the period ending Mar. 7.
The accolade comes on the heels of a dominant performance against UAB and USC-Upstate this past week, where he hit a .615, going 8-13 at the plate with 14 RBIs, four home runs, and scored five runs.
Lewis will forever be a part of Trojan history as he recorded eight RBIs with two home runs in game two against the Spartans. It is the first time since 2006 a Trojan recorded eight RBIs in a single game.
The Vicksburg, Miss. native continues to be one of the nation's best offensive players. Lewis leads the country in runs batted in per game (2.36), recording at least one RBI in all but three games this season. He is the only player in the country to be in the top five of both runs batted in and home runs per game (.73)
His 26 RBIs lead the country, and his 1.000 slugging percentage is second in the conference; Lewis's eight home runs are fourth among active players and two behind the national leader. Lewis has already matched last season's total for most home runs. In addition, he has reached base safely in all 11 games this season.
Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball. Membership is open to writers, broadcasters, and publicists of the sport. The Dick Howser Trophy is bestowed annually to the national college baseball player of the year. The award is named after former collegiate and Major League Baseball player and manager Dick Howser , who died of brain cancer in 1987 at the age of 51. In that same year, the award was established by friends of Howser. It is considered to be the Heisman Trophy of college baseball.
