Florida Gulf Coast comes to Troy 10-2 and ranks 24th in the nation, according to Baseball America, after most recently winning a series against 16th-ranked Florida State.
This week's games will be the Trojans' 12th and 13th straight home games. During that span, the Trojans offensively are one of the top teams in the nation. Troy averages 2.64 home runs per game, ranking third in the country with the second-highest slugging percentage among all of division one at .655. In the Trojans' last game, every single starter recorded a hit.
Shane Lewis has made his name known throughout baseball after being named national player of the week by the Collegiate Baseball publication. Lewis is the third Trojan in the last four seasons and the 13th ever to be recognized. The Vicksburg, Miss. native had an offensive explosion to lead the Trojans to a midweek win over UAB, a sweep of USC-Upstate. Lewis hit a team-high .615, going 8-13 at the plate with 14 RBIs, four home runs, and five runs scored.
In game two against the Spartans, Lewis had an eight RBI game with two home runs which was the first time a Trojan had recorded eight RBIs in a single game since 2006. Lewis leads the nation in runs batted in per game (2.36), recording at least one RBI in all but three games this season.
Much of the success during the win streak can be credited to the Trojan's ability to turn two. The Trojans have turned 13 double plays leading the Sun Belt Conference, and are fifth in the nation.
Kyle Mock and Kole Myers each take a team-high seven-game hitting streak into Tuesday, with Lewis, William Sullivan, and Tremayne Cobb Jr. all looking to continue their on-base streak reaching safely in all 11 games this season.
Wednesday's starter for the Trojans is still to be determined, but Ben Thompson will get the nod in the first game against the Eagles. Thompson will be making his third-midweek start as he looks for his second win of the season after having posted 13 strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work.
Thanks to Grayson Stewart in his last outing, the Trojan bullpen should be well-rested. Stewart went a career-high seven innings of shutout baseball with four strikeouts helping Troy run rule the Spartans. It was the Trojans' first seven-inning shutout of an opponent since March 23, 2013, against ULM. Stewart has now thrown 12 consecutive innings of shutout baseball.
