Shane Lewis Does it All in the Trojans 10th Straight Win

"Offensively, we were entirely dialed in," head coach Skylar Meade said. "Across the board, we took our walks and grinded it out. If you create enough action with people on base, you will be getting production. Pitching-wise, Fruit was outstanding, and the bullpen came in and really did a nice job. Did we play our greatest game? Absolutely not, but when you win, you will appreciate it every single time, get back to the drawing board, and be ready to go tomorrow."
Lewis's eight RBIs were the most by a Trojan since Stacy Gillispie against Stenson in 1999. Troy (10-0) is now one game away from matching the 1990 Trojans record of 11 straight wins to open a season and the second-best start in program history.
This is the first 10-game winning streak since 2006.
With the Trojans trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Lewis was the offensive spark in another Trojan come-from-behind victory as he tied the ball game with one swing of the bat as he just got enough for the ball to hit the top of the right field wall and bounce over to tie the game.
Troy scored 11 unanswered runs to break open the ball game before Lewis again sent one off the top of the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth to put the game out of hand.
In his third start of the season, Zach Fruit (1-0) earned his first win in a Trojan uniform, pitching five solid innings, only allowing three earned runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five. Fruit's fastball was consistently reaching 97 all afternoon.
Spartan starter Chase Matheny (0-2) had trouble putting away Trojan hitters as he gave up seven runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings of work while striking out five. The USC-Upstate (7-4) bullpen didn't fair any better, giving up eight runs on eight hits while only striking out three.
Offensively for the Spartans, three players had two RBIs, and a home run each but would leave seven on base and hit into a double play.
Troy found themselves down 1-0 two batters into the game as Daniel Gernon hit a solo home run to center. However, Kole Myers wasted little time seeing the Trojans trail as he took the first pitch deep down the left-field line to tie the game. This is the second time Myers has led off the game this season with a home run. He finished scoring three runs and had two hits and an RBI.
Trojans trailed 4-1 in the bottom fourth, but singles from William Sullivan and Kyle Mock brought Lewis up, and the game was tied shortly after. Troy is now 5-0 this season when trailing after three innings.
A big four-run fifth inning started with a Myers triple, and a sacrifice fly from Ethan Kavanagh gave Troy the lead for good. Tremayne Cobb Jr. walked with the bases loaded, bringing in another run, with Lewis up next, who singled, driving in two more to make it 8-4.
The game was broken open in the bottom of the seventh as Hudson Hartsfield singled after a walk and hit by pitch, picking himself up an RBI. However, what looked to be a double play turned into chaos as a bad throw from the pitcher to the shortstop allowed Lance Gardiner to score from second and kept the inning going for Kavanagh again, who doubled, bringing in the Trojans' 12th run.
Just as he did in the fourth, Lewis hit another three-run home run in the eighth to put a 15 spot on the Spartans. Despite five runs for USC-Upstate across the eighth and ninth, the Trojan lead was too much to overcome as Brandon Schrepf made his first appearances on the mound this season and closed things out.
The series is wrapped up tomorrow, Sunday, March 5th, at 1 p.m. from Riddle-Pace Field.
