TROY, Ala. – A brief two-game road trip against the American and Southeastern Conferences concludes on Saturday at 3:33 p.m. when the Troy women's basketball program invites UT Martin to Trojan Arena for the first time since 1992.
The former Gulf South Conference foes match back up for just the second time in the last 20 years as the Trojans (0-6) remain hungry for their first win, while the Skyhawks (1-6) recently broke through for their first win of 2023-24 last Saturday.
Saturday is a celebration alongside the Troy football program as fans can take pictures with the back-to-back Sun Belt Championship trophies before the game. A drawing is scheduled to award 100 random students free tickets to the Birmingham Bowl. Students must check in at the top of the student section before halftime to be entered. Once entered, the winners will receive an email at halftime and have until the fourth quarter to claim their prize. Lastly, all Kid's Club members get into the game for free, while pre-sale GA tickets are $3.33, thanks to our sponsorship with Vance Law Firm.

The Breakthrough is Coming
Troy continues to search for its first win of the season after dropping 86-70 to Georgia for the team's second loss to an SEC opponent of 2023-24. The Trojans outscored the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter 23-19 to mount a comeback but fell short.
Leilani Guion came off the bench and scored in double-figures for the first time in her career, with 10 points on two triples in just 11 minutes. The dynamic duo of Nia Daniel and Makayia Hallmon dominated the stat sheet for Troy with 19 and 18 points, respectively. As a team, the Trojans shot 90-plus percent at the charity stripe for the first time since March 7, 2019, against App State.
The 90 percent at the charity stripe also marked a season-high for Troy as they move up to 62nd in the nation and third in the Sun Belt Conference. Troy also finds itself at the No. 12 spot in the NCAA in offensive rebounds with 16.8 per game.
Saturday marks the second meeting between Troy and UT Martin in just over a year. The last these teams played was Nov. 10, 2022, in Martin Tenn., where the Trojans walked away victorious 89-84. Gabbi Cartagena came off the bench to produce her career-high of 14 points on 5-of-6 from the field, while Tai'Sheka Porchia had a double-double on 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Saturday's Breakthrough
Last Saturday saw a breakthrough for the Skyhawks as they acquired their first win of 2023-24 via a 94-82 victory over Evansville. En route to the victory, UT Martin shot the lights out, going 62.5 percent from the field, 41.7 from deep and 86.4 from the charity stripe.
Despite a tough start to the season, UT Martin finds itself atop the charts in the Ohio Valley Conference in blocks (4.0) and steals (10.4). They also have the individual leader in blocks in Anaya Brown, who's rejected 12 total for 1.7 per game and steals in Love Mays with 2.5 per game.
A 23-point performance by Kenley McCarn against Evansville boosted her already team-leading 14 points per game on 36.1 percent from the field. Brown is the only other Skyhawk averaging double-figures at 12 points and 6.3 rebounds. Off the bench, Norah Clark provides the spark with her 46.8 percent shooting from the field for 8.1 points.
Tennessee Numbers
• Pending any unforeseen issues, Sharonica Hartsfield looks to start her 58th career game for Troy, overtaking Felmas Koranga for most starts on the roster.
• Guion produced her first double-digit game since joining the Trojans on 4-of-5 from the field and two triples.
• Troy turned it around from deep after netting zero against Memphis, drilling seven triples against Georgia.
• At the charity stripe, Troy shot its best percentage of the season, going 9-of-10 for 90 percent – previous high was 84.6 at No. 15 Tennessee. This marked the first time since March 7, 2019, against App State (92.3 percent - 12-of-13) that the Trojans shot above 90 percent at the line.
• The Trojans have won four straight games against UT Martin, with their last loss coming on Jan. 12, 1991, when the Skyhawks defeated Troy 78-63. Since then, the average margin of victory for Troy is plus-12.75.
• Compared to the other Sun Belt teams, Troy ranks in the top three in assist/turnover ratio (third - 1.0), assists (third - 14.8), free throw percentage (third - 75.5) and turnovers (third - 14.8).
• With five assists at Georgia, Makayia Hallmon became just the third different Trojan to lead the team in assists - only Hartsfield and Wagner had before.
• Shaulana Wagner entered D-I basketball with a high passing IQ, dishing out a team-high 4.5 assists to rank third in the Sun Belt Conference.
