Troy's Annual Basketball Mardi Gras Celebration Set for Feb. 11

TROY, Ala. – Mardi Gras returns to the Wiregrass on Saturday, Feb. 11, with Troy's annual Trojan Mardi Gras celebration in Trojan Arena before Troy's men's basketball game against Louisiana.

Reserved tickets to the game are buy one, get one free, while all kids 12 and under will receive a free general admission ticket to the game. Trojan Mardi Gras starts at 3 p.m. on the concourse of Trojan Arena, and the game tips off at 4 p.m. The first 1,500 fans through the doors will receive a free Troy State shersey.

Numerous restaurants and vendors will be on hand with free samples for fans during the Mardi Gras celebration -- Preston's, marinated steak tips and chicken; Publix – King Cake, Jersey Mike's – mini turkey and ham subs, Conecuh – sausage dogs; Coca-Cola – product sampling; Cook Me Something Mister – jambalaya; Domino's – pepperoni and cheese pizzas; Alabama Peanut Producers – peanut samples; Confucius Institute – dumplings and egg rolls; West Walnut Cookie Company – cookies; Goldfinger's – Saratoga chips and corn nuggets. Additional vendors are expected to be added to the list between now and gameday.

In addition to Trojan Mardi Gras, the game is also Troy's annual Men's Basketball Letterwinners Game. This year, Troy will honor the 1993 and 2003 teams with special recognitions on top of the normal Letterwinners Day festivities.Â

All returning basketball letterwinners can receive up to four complimentary tickets to the game and are invited to an exclusive reception with their families. Letterwinners are asked to RSVP to Stephen Brown via email at rsbrown@troy.edu or by phone at 317-517-9864.Â

The 1993 squad won a school-record 27 games en route to an appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championship Game against Cal State Bakersfield. Maestri's high-flying bunch topped the 100-point mark a remarkable 25 times in 32 games that season, including 15 straight games to open the year.

The squad was led by Troy Sports Hall of Fame inductee and All-American Terry McCord, who averaged 24.2 points per game and shot 51.6 percent from the floor, while Chris Williams averaged 20.2 points in his debut season for the Trojans.

Maestri's 2003 team made program history, earning Troy's first-ever Division I conference tournament title and a trip to March Madness. The Trojans won 14 of their final 15 games of the season leading into the NCAA Tournament, plus had non-conference victories over Arkansas and Duquesne.Â

Ben Fletcher led the Trojans averaging 13.9 points per game as he earned All-Atlantic Sun First Team honors that season. Greg Davis, whose 408 career assists rank among Troy's all-time leaders, added 11.0 points, and the Trojans set a school record, which still stands today, holding opponents to just 35.9 percent shooting.
