Â
TROY, Ala. – The only two active coaches in the Sun Belt to win a Sun Belt Conference championship square off Saturday in Trojan Arena when Troy plays host to Louisiana at 4 p.m.
Â
Under Chanda Rigby, Troy has won five Sun Belt regular season or tournament titles over the last seven years, while Gary Brodhead led Louisiana to the 2021 regular season title (by percentage points over Troy due to unbalanced schedules).
Â
The game is Troy's annual Teacher Appreciation Night, and all local educators will receive one free general admission ticket. In addition, the first 250 Troy students in attendance will receive a free OneTROY cup and the concession stands will feature a pulled pork sandwich.
Â
Both teams are coming into Saturday on winning streaks, with Troy (9-7, 4-1 SBC) having won four straight games and Louisiana (9-8, 3-2) on a two-game streak.
Â
The Trojans have dominated during their four-game streak winning by an average of 18.3 points behind 17.3 points per game from Makayia Hallmon, who scored a game-high 21 points in Troy's win over ULM on Thursday. Hallmon spent the first three seasons of her career at Louisiana, where she earned All-Sun Belt honors last year.
Â
Contrasting styles will be on display Saturday, with Troy's high-powered offense squaring off against Louisiana's shutdown defense. The Trojans rank second in the league averaging 81.9 points per game, while the Cajuns lead the Sun Belt holding opponents to 54.1 points per contest.
Â
In Sun Belt games, Troy's 14.2 scoring margin leads the Sun Belt and ranks fourth holding opponents to just 37.2 percent shooting from the floor. The Trojans have ramped it up defensively as a whole holding six of its last opponents to 35 percent shooting or less from the floor.
Â
Louisiana defeated South Alabama, 66-49, on Thursday behind an 18-point performance from Lanay Wheaton. The Cajuns have held all but three of their opponents to less than 70 points, including seven straight – the Trojans have scored 75-plus points in nine straight games and 70-plus points in 14-of-16 games.
