TROY, Ala. – Former Troy University women's basketball standout Tiyah Johnson will continue her playing career overseas in Portugal after signing with ACD Ferragudo. Johnson played at Troy from 2019-2022.
"I'm excited to learn their culture," said Johnson. "I'm excited to play basketball and to go out there and showcase my talent. Troy has taught me to be accountable and to be disciplined. I think that is what prepared me the most."
Johnson came to Troy for the 2019-20 season after spending time at Shelton State Community College. After being named an academic all-American in her final year at Shelton State, she came in and contributed immediately as a Trojan, earning 10 starts to help Troy win its first-ever Sun Belt Conference regular season title.
Tiyah is a player who really handled things the right way," said head coach Chanda Rigby. "She had a dream to play professionally, and she went after that dream with dedicated, disciplined hard work. She also, however, worked very hard in the classroom to set herself up for success beyond basketball. I'm thankful for all Tiyah contributed to Troy, and I look forward to all she will accomplish moving forward."
The Phenix City native broke out in her second season as a Trojan during the 2020-21 season. After making 26 starts on the year, Johnson landed on the all-Sun Belt Conference third team and aided the Trojans to a trip to the NCAA Tournament as a 15 seed.
During that season, Johnson had a streak of nine-straight games with double-digit points and scored at least 10 points in 14 of Troy's 17 SBC contests. She landed second on the team in scoring at the end of the season after averaging 13 points per game.
During three seasons at Troy, Johnson averaged 9.2 points per game, with 3.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists. She received her bachelor's degree at Troy in biomedical science and is still pursuing her goal of becoming an anesthesiologist.
ACD Ferragudo plays in the first division of Portugal's professional women's basketball league, and its roster features players from Portugal, the United States, and Trinidad and Tobago.
