TROY, Ala. – Conference play continues for Troy volleyball as they hit the road to Hattiesburg, Miss, to take on Southern Miss for the first time as a member of the Sun Belt Conference. The weekend series will start on September 30 at 6 p.m. and conclude on Saturday, October 1 at 3 p.m., with both matches streaming on ESPN+.
"Being in the conference schedule routine is really good for our team," head coach Josh Lauer said. "This is our first visit to Southern Miss as a member of the Sun Belt, which is a fun first conference road trip opportunity. Every match is important from here on out as every team has their eyes on eventually seeding for the conference tournament in November."
This will be the second straight year the Trojans have matched up with the Golden Eagles, with Southern Miss winning last season's contest in four sets. These two teams have met a total of nine times, with Troy 4-5 all-time, with the first meeting coming in 1993. Troy last beat Southern Miss during the 2014 season in three sets.
The Trojans are coming off a split with Louisiana last weekend, which saw Amara Anderson become the program career assist leader and the first Troy player to surpass 5000 career assists.
Julia Brooks is also chasing history this season as she moved up to second place all-time in solo blocks with 76 after recording four last weekend. Brooks now sits nine solo blocks away from becoming Troy's all-time leader.
This weekend, the top two hitters will square off in Mia Wesley of Southern Miss and Tori Hester of Troy. Wesley leads the Sun Belt in kills with 281 on the year, averaging 5.30 per set, with Hester following close behind at 224 kills on the year, averaging 4.07 per set.
