TROY, Ala. – On the final day of the Trojan Invitational, Troy fell to Jacksonville in a five-set slugfest that saw Jacksonville beat Troy (25-16, 19-25, 15-25, 25-12, 19-21) from Trojan Arena Saturday afternoon. The loss ends the Trojans' game-winning streak.
The Trojans (6-6) saw three double-digit kill performances coming from Tori Hester (18), who also finished with a double-double after recording 17 digs, Amiah Butler (18), and Julia Brooks (12). With 44 assists and 17 digs, Amara Anderson finished with a double-double. Anderson is now 31 assists from becoming the all-time assist leader in Troy history.
Set One: A kill and ace from Hester allowed Troy to take a 16-14 lead after the media timeout, and Troy wouldn't relinquish it the rest of the set. The Trojans totaled 15 kills which were the most of any of the five sets. Anderson sealed the set with an ace.
Set Two: After falling behind 13-17, Troy rattled off four straight points to tie the match, which included a kill from Brooks and a Hester service ace. The Dolphins responded with six points of their own to put the set out of reach and even the match.
Set Three: The visitors dominated much of the third set seeing a 15-4 lead at one point. Errors played a large role in the deficit as Troy totaled 14 in the set, giving Jacksonville the 2-1 advantage.
Set Four: Troy left little doubt in the fourth set after the only tie score was 1-1; after that, Troy was in control. Brooks, Butler, and Hester combined for 13 kills and hit a match-high of .343. After doubling their lead to 20-10, Troy would win by 13 points.
Set Five: No team wanted to lose the fifth set. Each team traded points throughout. With a 15-14 lead, a Sara Bates service error tied the set. A kill from Butler once again gave Troy a lead, but troy failed to capitalize. Hester gave troy a 19-18 lead after a kill, but that would be the last point for the Trojans as Jacksonville rattled off three straight points to win the match.
Up Next: Troy will open Sun Belt Conference play with a pair of matches against Louisiana from Trojan Arena on September 22 and 23rd at 6 p.m.
