TROY, Ala. – The Troy men's tennis team completed its weekend Sun Belt sweep by stunning No. 48 Louisiana Sunday morning at the Lunsford Tennis Complex. The Trojans moved to 8-1 at home on the year with the victory.
Emotions were running high from the start as the doubles point came down to a classic battle on court three after Troy (15-9, 2-3) and Louisiana (17-4, 4-2) split on court one and court two by matching 6-1 scores.
Troy's combo of Carles Anton and Vito Llinares found themselves down 4-2 in the deciding pairing before mounting a furious rally to win four straight games and take the match 6-4. Leading 5-4, Anton and Llinares fell behind 0-40 in the clinching game before winning four straight points to clinch the match and the all-important doubles point for the Trojans.
Leading 5-1 on court two in singles, Anton's opponent retired after suffering an injury to push Troy's lead out to 2-0, and Llinares pulled the Trojans within a point of victory with a three-set win on court five, capped by a dominant 6-1 win in the third set. The victory was Anton's seventh in his last eight matches, while Llinares won for the eighth time in his last nine matches.
The Cajuns pulled within one, 3-2, with close wins on courts one and three. Louisiana's win on the top court came on a pair of tiebreaks in both sets, while its victory on court three came in three sets, with the final set decided in a tiebreaker.
Christopher Tasker, who hadn't played a singles match since February 12 prior to this week, clinched the match with another thriller on court six. He took the opening set in a tiebreak before his Cajun opponent rallied to force a deciding third set, which Tasker won by a 6-4 margin. He is now 7-2 on the year during dual matches.
Troy wraps up the regular season with another big matchup as South Alabama (14-6, 4-1) makes the trip to the Lunsford Tennis Complex on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
