TROY, Ala. – Fresh off a second consecutive semifinals appearance in the Sun Belt Tournament, the Troy men's tennis team bolstered its roster for the 2022-23 season with the addition of Mario Martinez Serrano, head coach Rolando Vargas announced Monday.
Martinez Serrano has reached as high as No. 207 in the ITF Junior Rankings in his career (Jan. 2022) and is the sixth-ranked junior in Spain in his age group. He advanced to the finals of the J4 Grand Avignon in both singles and doubles, won the J4 Leiria Portugal in singles, and advanced to the semifinals in doubles.
"I am thrilled to have Mario join the Trojan Family," Vargas said. "He was a very sought-after prospect with very good rankings in Spain and the world ITF Junior Rankings. What stands out to me about Mario is his humility and work ethic. He will fit in exactly with the culture we have in our program. Mario is a great student and a great tennis player; I can't wait for him to be part of our team."
This season alone, Martinez Serrano has victories over players ranked No. 19, 25 and 75 in the ITF Junior Rankings. Additionally, he reached the semifinals of the ITF J4 in Tarragona and the finals of the ITF J3 in Barcelona.
"Our goal is to win the Sun Belt Conference title, and Mario is a big step towards helping us reach that goal," Vargas said. "Now, with Mario and Yeray (Andres Pastor), who signed with us in November, joining us, I'm excited about what we can accomplish in the next academic year."
