TROY, Ala. – Troy had its most physical practice of the week on Saturday, putting shoulder pads on for the first time this year. Head coach Jon Sumrall split the two hours of training, giving his players their first taste of "The Vet" in 2022.
"First day of practice in pads had a lot of energy and enthusiasm," Sumrall said. "I thought we did a really good job in our first-time wearing shoulder pads and practicing with the right tempo at the line of scrimmage."
Troy had a balanced approach to all aspects of the game during practice, emphasizing the team having a taste of physicality. The team conducted numerous 11-on-11 drills, hoping to build upon the chemistry under their new coaching staff. The Trojans continue to grow towards complete contact next week per the NCAA acclimation mandate.
"They were smart at being physical while not throwing guys around," Sumrall stated. "They brought the physical element into the game but also being smart about how we practice. They competed. The excitement level of these guys, I have no complaints. They have come out every day this week with energy."
With the first week in the books, the Trojans look to week two, sticking with the Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday split. Tuesday's practice kicks off at 8 a.m. pending inclement weather, with Troy splitting time between the practice fields and "The Vet."
"It was a really good day today getting pads on," sophomore running back Kimani Vidal said. "It was fun in our first Saturday to be physical. Ball security is going to be really important. We need to pay attention to details because the intensity level has been pushed."
Earlier the week, Troy announced its plans for T-Day on April 23; kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m., and the day is chockfull of activities on campus, including a Fun Day, Lunch with Legends and Kids Camp. Visit TroyTrojans.com/TDay for full details.
