TROY, Ala. – Following three-months of offseason workouts, Troy football hit the practice field for the first time under head coach Jon Sumrall with a two-hour workout on the grass practice fields behind Trojan Arena.
"It was great to get back on the grass," head coach Jon Sumrall said. "We have done a lot since January with learning the schemes we are running on offense, defense and the kicking game. The guys have put in a lot of hard work in the weight room, conditioning and their nutrition. It was an opportunity to start the foundation from a practice standpoint. It was fun to watch the guys fly around and compete. It was a great day one, and now, we have to get better day two."
The Trojans opened with 12 minutes of special teams work and spent a seven-minute period working on special teams again in the middle of the 12-period practice. The first of 15 spring practices also saw Sumrall's Trojans work in individual, 1-on-1s, 11-on-11 and 7-on-7 situations before moving into more specialized periods towards the end of practice.
"We are fired up, but I am not worried about the first game, training camp or even T-Day yet. Today is the first practice, and I am looking forward to watching the tape, getting things cleaned up and having great meetings. We just need to be worried about the guys coming out here and getting a little bit better on Thursday."
The Trojans are back to work Thursday at 8 a.m. on the practice fields. Earlier this week, Troy announced its plans for T-Day on April 23; kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the day is chalkful of activities on campus.
