TROY, Ala. – For the first time in program history, Troy baseball swept a series from the Louisiana Rajun Cajuns after the Trojans 8-3 win on Sunday afternoon from Riddle-Pace Field.
The victory also makes it the eighth straight win this season, marking the first time since 2006 the Trojans have had such a winning streak. The 2006 Trojans went on to win the Sun Belt championship and made an NCAA regional.
Trojan Starter Bay Witcher (2-1) was sensational, going five innings, allowing one run on five hits, two walks, and a strikeout.
All afternoon, the Trojan defense was stellar behind Witcher, with Trey Leonard making two spectacular plays in left field. The senior Leonard was also productive at the plate, going 2-4 with a triple, two runs driven in, and two runs scored.
Two key double plays helped Troy limit Louisiana, and no errors on the afternoon allowed Troy to play a clean baseball game compared to two mistakes made by Louisiana.
Louisiana starter Jeff Wilson (1-1) is given the loss after allowing six runs on six hits, three walks, and two strikeouts.
The Trojans got to Wilson early as Seth Johnson started the bottom of the second with a single and was followed by walks to Cameron Gray and Clay Stearns. Easton Kirk would plate one run after a weak ground ball to second base.
Another Trojan walk brought up designated hitter William Sullivan, who singled, and a throwing error by the Cajun shortstop brought in two more runs to give Troy a 3-0 lead.
Louisiana responded in the top of the fourth similarly after a leadoff walk made its way to third and scored off a ground ball to second base.
Leonard picked up his eighth RBI of the season with a single to make it 4-1 and was followed by a Stearns double and a Jesse Hall sacrifice fly to make it 6-1.
Ryan Pettys and Grayson Stewart both would come out of the bullpen after Witcher, with Stewart earning the eventual save after 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball and three strikeouts to earn his first save of the season.
Troy would secure the victory after adding two insurance runs from Leonard and Donovan Whibbs in the bottom of the eighth.
Up Next: The Trojans complete their seven-game home stand on Tuesday, March 22, as they take on Alabama State from Riddle-Pace Field at 6 p.m.
