DADE CITY, Fla. – Alyssa Mercado fired the best 54-hole score of the season to lead Troy to a third-place finish at the Spring Break Shootout, which wrapped play Tuesday at the Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club. Mercado shot 2-under on the par-71 course, including a pair of rounds in the 60s to close out her stay.
Mercado, a freshman transfer from North Florida, shot a 2-under 69 thanks to a trio of birdies on Tuesday one day after shooting a 3-under 68 in the second round. Mercado's two rounds in the 60s are the first by a Trojan golfer this year, and her 2-under 211 tied ShaeLee Scarberry for the best 54-hole score of the year by a Trojan.
She finished the week with 10 birdies tying for fifth in the field, while her 1-under 3.96 average on the par-4 holes was second best, and her overall score was good for a career-best fourth place finish overall.
Florida Gulf Coast won the team title outlasting Western Kentucky by two shots, while the Trojans were 11 shots back in third. It was Troy's second third-place finish of the year and its second-best performance relative to par as the Trojans were 25-over as a team for the three rounds.
Scarberry just missed out on her fourth top-10 of the year as she finished in 11th place at 5-over for the week; she carded two birdies on the day and shot 2-over. Elizabeth Caldarelli picked up her third top-25 finish of the year after shooting 76 on the day and was 9-over for the tournament, good for a tie for 22nd place.
Anna Claire Little climbed 11 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 34th place after a 2-over 73 on Tuesday, her best round of the tournament, while Bruna Roqueta tied for 41st place at 14-over and Elisabeth Preus finished in a tie for 50thplace at 17-over.
