Back-to-Back; Troy Men’s Golf Wins Gulf Coast Collegiate for Second Straight Victory

BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. – After picking up its first tournament victory in five years last week, the Troy men's golf team didn't have to wait nearly as long for its next win as the Trojans were victorious at the Gulf Coast Collegiate, which wrapped play on Tuesday.
Troy rallied past North Alabama for a 1-shot victory at the 6,769-yard Diamondhead Country Club after entering the day a shot back of the Lions. The outlook didn't look very promising for the Trojans during Tuesday's early returns as Troy found itself five shots back after a rough opening four holes.
However, "Sunday Reagan" as he's being called by his teammates, came up with the shot of the tournament. Reagan Harrell stood on the fairway of the par-4, 409-yard 14th at three-over-par and 104 yards away from the pin. The senior pulled out his 60-degree wedge and his ball one-hopped the green, checked the hole and spun in for an eagle.
"After a slow start, we began to make some birdies and some putts in the middle of the round," head coach Forrest Schultz said. "Everybody saw Reagan's two on No. 14 on the live scoring; it was the turning point of the day for sure. We didn't have our best stuff this week, but we were scrappy, and I'm proud of the fight we put up."
Harrell finished his round at even-par after he added a birdie on No. 3 to battle all the way back after taking a triple on his first hole of the day (No. 4). This comes one week after shooting a 1-under 71 in the final round of Troy's victory at the Savannah Harbor Invite; Harrell finished this week tied for 26th place.
He was one of three Trojans to shoot even par on the day, joining Will McFadden and Brantley Scott with 72 on their scorecards. Scott carded six birdies on the day and finished with 13 for the week, the second-most in the field, while McFadden finished with three birdies on Tuesday.
Kyle Cornelius wrapped up his spring debut tied for ninth place playing as an individual after shooting 4-over in the final round, while Jake Springer added five birdies to bounce back from a quad on his opening hole to shoot 1-over on the day; Springer tied for 17th place. Nicklas Borrmann tied with Harrell in 26th place after shooting 3-over on Tuesday.
Troy finished with 47 birdies over the three rounds, just one behind New Orleans for the most in the field, but three eagles and the top par-3 scoring (3.20) in the field provided a path to victory.
"We've had a good game plan since day one, and they've stuck to it," Schultz said. "These guys are hungry, and they are playing with a lot of confidence, which continues to build each week. Our guys work as hard as anyone in the country and are dead-set on getting into match play at the Sun Belt Championship."
Troy has a couple of weeks off before heading to North Myrtle Beach, S.C., for the Bash at the Beach hosted by App State.
