Camp’s Double-Double Powers Troy Past Texas State
12/31/2022 4:47:00 PM | Basketball (W)
TROY, Ala. – Paced by five players in double-figures and a double-double by Janeen Camp in her first start of the season, Troy used its second-best shooting performance of the season to defeat Texas State, 79-63, Saturday in Sun Belt action in Trojan Arena.
Camp scored 12 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor and tied her career-high with 16 rebounds, in addition to blocking three shots and recording a pair of steals. Troy (6-7, 1-1 SBC) improved to 35-5 in Sun Belt play over the past three seasons, and head coach Chanda Rigby moved to within two victories of 200 in her Troy career.
"It was an incredible performance today," Rigby said. "Texas State was a tougher matchup for us than Southern Miss on Thursday, and we were down two more post players today. I'm really proud of the adjustments the assistant coaches made and the buy-in from the team."
The Trojans shot 46.5 percent from the floor (33-of-71), their best against a Division I opponent this season, and improve to 5-0 on the year when shooting 38 percent or better as a team. What makes the offensive performance even more impressive is when you consider the opponent. Texas State (9-4, 1-1) entered the game leading the Sun Belt and 32nd nationally, holding opponents to just 55.8 points per game; Troy's 79 points were a season-high allowed by the Bobcats.
Nia Daniel and Makayia Hallmon each netted a game-high 15 points to lead the Trojans, while Tai'Sheka Porchia added 13 points and Jada Walton dropped in 12. Porchia's double-figure effort was her team-leading seventh straight, while Daniel connected on 3-of-6 from beyond the arc for her sixth straight game with a 3-pointer and fourth with three or more. Hallmon added nine rebounds and four assists and Sharonica Hartsfield finished with a game-high six assists.
Troy quickly turned a 3-point first quarter lead into a 10-point advantage less than three minutes into the second quarter on a 7-0 run sparked by buckets from Camp and Hartsfield and a 3-pointer by Gabbi Cartagena.
An 8-point halftime lead, 38-30, swelled in the opening four minutes of the third quarter as the Trojans scored nine of the first 11 points coming out of the break to grab a 15-point lead, 47-32. Texas State would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way two days after handing Georgia Southern just its second loss of the season.
Da'Nasia Hood led Texas State with 12 points and 12 rebounds, it marked just the third time in eight games this season that Hood was held to fewer than 20 points.
