Martial Becomes All-Time NCAA FBS Tackles Leader; Troy Survives at Home Against Army for Seventh-Straight Win

TROY, Ala. – Troy linebacker Carlton Martial etched his name in the history books on Saturday afternoon, becoming the all-time career tackles leader at the NCAA FBS level to lead Troy to a thrilling 10-9 victory over Army in front of a record crowd of 31,010 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Martial had 17 tackles in the first half and his 20th of the game, which came in the third quarter, gave him 546 for his career to pass Northwestern's Tim McGarigle for the NCAA record. The Mobile, Ala., native finished with a career-high 22 tackles, his second career 20-tackle game.
"It's crazy to think about, but it hasn't really soaked in yet," Martial said. "I'm at a loss for words. I'm proud of my team. I didn't come back to break this record. I came back for my teammates. Honestly, it's really a team effort. We were 11 guys on the same page."
Troy (8-2, 5-1 SBC) won for the seventh-consecutive time dating back to the Hail Mary loss at App State in week three, while Army fell to 3-6 after losing for the second straight week.
"I don't know what it's like to do what Carlton's done," head coach Jon Sumrall said. "I've only seen Carlton Martial be able to get 20 tackles in a game. He never ceases to amaze me. He's an unbelievable young man, and I had the privilege to recruit him out of high school. I'm so proud of him because he's had so many people in his ear telling him he wasn't enough. But he's truly a tackle machine. I've known him for so long, since his young high school career. When I was hired back, it wasn't about trying to recruit new high school kids. It was about getting him to return for his sixth year."
Troy took possession of the ball with 11:23 on the clock in the fourth quarter trailing 9-3. The Trojans began the drive with three plays of 10 or more yards that placed them inside the Army 5-yard line. On third down, quarterback Gunnar Watson and the Trojans thought they had a touchdown pass to AJ Lewis, but a replay review showed Lewis out of bounds.
On the succeeding fourth down play, Watson lined up in shotgun formation and lobbed a ball into the corner of the end zone for Tez Johnson, who kept his feet in bounds to secure the first, and only touchdown, of the game for Troy.
Troy held Army on the ensuing possession and milked more than three minutes off the clock before punting the ball back to the Black Knights.
Army took over with 2:10 to play and 72 yards of green turf in front of it. The Black Knights converted a 3rd-and-10 with a 16-yard pass and, later in the drive, completed another deep pass for a 24-yard completion. Troy's defense stood tall on the following three plays, and Army attempted a 41-yard game-winning field goal with 15 seconds to play. However, Quinn Maretzki's attempt sailed wide right to set off a wild celebration on Troy's sideline.
Troy was held scoreless in the first half and found itself down 9-0 at the half after Army converted on a touchdown and a field goal to begin its scoring day. The Black Knights got on the board with a 3-yard Tyhier Tyler touchdown run, and Maretzki booted a 26-yard field goal right before the break.
To begin the second half, Troy needed just five minutes to march down the field to get Brooks Buce in field goal range to convert on his 13th field goal of the season, and the Trojans' first three points of the afternoon with 10:06 left in the third quarter.
