TROY, Ala. – The Trojans battled, and despite a career-high 23 digs from Tori Hester to go along with a match-high 19 kills and her 16th double-double of the season, seeing eight straight, the Trojans fell in five sets to Georgia Southern (19-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-17, 13-15) Friday night from Statesboro.
Troy (16-11, 10-5) has now lost three straight and 4-3 overall when playing five sets. Along with Hester, Amiah Butler also recorded 19 kills, as Amara Anderson put up 56 assists. However, the Trojans had a rough night from the service line as they committed 18 errors and only recorded four blocks compared to the Eagles' 12.
Georgia Southern (15-10, 7-6) ended their four-game losing streak as Emily Jarome led the hosts with 18 kills. Despite only hitting .166 as a team, nine service aces and only 11 errors helped keep the Trojans at bay.
Set One: Three straight service errors started the match in a set. There was only one lead change as, after an attack error by Anderson at 2-2, Georgia Southern led the rest of the way. Troy tried battling back but could never within four points.
Set Two: Troy looked to take advantage of a back-and-forth set as the two teams traded points as it was tied late at 19. A kill from Hester gave the Trojans the eventual lead, and they would not squander the opportunity to even the match as Hester secured the 15th kill of the set to end it, which was the most of any of the sets, hitting .281.
Set Three: The third set was once again decided late. In a 22-22 set, Georgia Southern would go on to score three straight points to close it out and take a 2-1 lead.
Set four: The Trojans continued to fight as they have done all season in the fourth set, as they dominated from the start. The Trojans never trailed or allowed Georgia Southern to tie it. A two-point game quickly became an eight-point lead as the Trojans rattled off six straight points to put the set out of reach and send it to the fifth.
Set Five: A Butler kill knotted the set up at 13-13, but the Eagles secured the following two points to finish the set off with an ace and secure the win.
Up Next: The regular season ends tomorrow, November 12, at noon as these two teams meet again as Troy looks to get back in the win column before the conference tournament.
