TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Kristina Kukaras carried the momentum from an impressive 3-0 first day at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic in the Baumgardner Tennis Facility by winning the Patti Farmer Singles Draw on Saturday afternoon to be crowned one of four singles champions.
"The girls had a very good start today and went undefeated in singles play. They kept their momentum going and increased their level of play each match throughout the tournament. I am very proud of their overall tournament performance. I'm very happy for Kristina to win her singles draw. She defeated a good ETSU opponent and played so well."
After defeating Alabama's Klara Milicevic, 2-6, 6-3, 10-8, and South Alabama's Tereza Dejnozkova, 6-4, 6-3, the junior of Kukaras was primed to battle ETSU's Ralitsa Alexandrova for the draw championship. The German native dominated early by winning the first set, 6-3, to take the advantage. She replicated the first set, quickly obtaining the title of champion for her first tournament win in her career.
Hagar Amin entered today with a chance to win the consultation final after responding to her 7-6 (6), 6-4 loss to Michigan State's Juliette Nask with a 6-7 (4), 6-1, 10-1 victory over Tulane's Lily Walther. The sophomore lost the first set to Pilar Astigarrga Harper from Stetson before forcing the extra set with a 6-4 response. Amin and Harper went back and forth in the extra set before the Sakkara Language School graduate pulled away for the 10-5 win.
Unfortunately, the momentum of the singles victories didn't carry for either player as they joined forces to face Alabama's Ola Pitak / Kasia Pitak. Despite standing firm, the pair of Trojans fell 7-6 (4). In the consultation bracket, the duo couldn't find a way, suffering another loss, 6-3, to Tulane's Kristen Borland / Brooke Theis.
Valeriia Avdeeva split her final day in Tuscaloosa after having her pairing up with Tess Menten from Stetson spoiled with a 6-1 loss to Tulane's Sean Mullen / Jiayun Zhu. However, the freshman secured her first singles victory on the weekend with a huge straight-set win over the host team in Alabama's Sydney Orefice, 6-3, 6-3.
