HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Troy was in control of the match from start to finish as they dominated Southern Miss in three sets (26-24, 25-22, 25-17) for their second sweep of the season and second conference win Saturday afternoon.
"Really great bounce-back response after a tough loss last night," head coach Josh Lauer said. "We had great defensive execution, especially today both front row and back row. We also had multiple players contribute last night and today, and Tori Hester was special this weekend. Back-to-back double-doubles and 44 kills on the weekend were fun to watch. All in all, really proud of our team focus and effort this entire weekend."
The Trojan (8-8, 2-2) was humming all match as Tori Hester and Julia Brooks each recorded 17 kills to lead the offense, which had a .364 hitting percentage. Hester also led the team in digs, ending the match with 11 and her sixth double-double of the year.
The Golden Eagles (10-6, 2-2) had one player with double-digit kills as Cara Atkinson finished with 10. With a .220 hitting percentage, Southern Miss finished with 26 errors despite having four more service errors.
Set One: Eight of the 17 kills for the Trojans came from Julia Brooks, who hit .667. Southern Miss took a 1-0 lead but wouldn't lead the rest of the set as defensively Troy lad four blocks in the set, with half coming from Savannah Poling. Troy held a five-point advantage at 22-17, but five straight points from the host even the match. Southern Miss was also to hold off two set points and tie it 24. As they did all match, Brooks and Hester got kills to close it out and give troy the set advantage.
Set Two: With a one-point lead at 23-22, Amara Anderson, who finished with 44 assists, set up Julia Brooks not once but twice for kills to give Troy a two-set lead. Southern Miss had 11 kills in the set, which was the lowest of the three sets. Troy led the entire way as Southern Miss never saw a lead.
Set Three: 18 kills in the set were the most for Troy of the three. Troy also saw their largest lead of eight points in the set after an Anderson kill made it 20-12. However, Southern Miss would not get within less than five the rest of the way as Brooks once again finished things off, giving Troy the win.
Up Next: Troy returns to Trojan Arena next week to square off with another new Sun Belt Conference member in Marshall. The series begins on Thursday, October 6, at 6 p.m., with the second game on October 7. Both streamed on ESPN+
