SAN MARCOS, Texas – During another shorthanded matchup for the Trojans, the Troy Women's Basketball squad dominated Texas State, 96-73, to pick up their seventh consecutive victory Thursday night at Strahan Arena.
Five of Troy's (11-5, 2-0 Sun Belt) eight available players ended the game in double-figures, led by a season-high 25 points from Tiyah Johnson.
For the Bobcats (6-9, 1-2 Sun Belt), Da'Naisia Hood finished the game with 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way.
How It Happened
After winning the tip, Janiah Sandifer laid in the opening bucket of the contest, and the Trojans didn't look back. With the Trojans leading by three, 11-8, Ja'Mia Hollings did what she does best and knocked down a layup within her first minute of action. Both sides traded buckets through the remaining five, setting Troy up for the 21-17 lead at the end of the first period.
Back-to-back makes from Felmas Koranga and Jada Walton gave the Trojans a 25-17 lead just a minute into the second quarter, but the Bobcats refused to back down. With 4:40 left to play, Hood gave Texas State its first lead since the early minutes of the first, 30-29. However, an 8-0 run sparked by a Koranga layup extended Troy's lead back to seven. A pair of makes from both sides gave Troy a 40-35 lead heading into the break.
The Trojans opened up the third quarter with a 9-0 run kickstarted by a triple from Johnson to extend Troy's lead to 48-37 with 7:47 to go. Johnson gave the Trojans their largest lead of the period, 69-47, with a fast break jumper at the 1:49 mark. Jhileiya Dunlap put the exclamation mark on the end of the quarter with a jumper to give Troy a 20-point advantage heading into the final 10 minutes of action.
After Texas State's Lauryn Thompson cut Troy's advantage back to 18 with a layup, Amber Leggett drained a shot from behind the arc to regain the 20-point lead and never looked back. A layup by Johnson with 1:14 to play gave Troy its largest lead of the game at 96-67, but a pair of Bobcat makes set up the eventual 96-73 Trojan victory.
