TROY, Ala. – One of the all-time winningest coaches in Troy Baseball history, John Mayotte, passed away Friday. A member of the Troy Baseball Hall of Fame, Mayotte won 386 games during his 12-year career with the Trojans.
Mayotte took over for Hall of Fame head coach Chase Riddle in the 1991 season and led Troy to the NCAA Division II College World Series in 1993 and was named the National Coach of the Year.
Following the program's move to Division I in 1994, the Trojans continued their winning ways, advancing to a pair of NCAA Regional tournaments in 1995 and 1997. The team also won a share of five conference titles, the last in 1998 when the Trojans captured the A-Sun Western Division crown.
Under Mayotte, 44 Trojans earned all-conference honors, including 27 first-team selections. In addition, seven players earned their respective league's Player of the Year award.
Overall, Mayotte won more than 1,300 games as a head coach and manager at Troy, Eckerd College, Cape Cod League, New York Collegiate Baseball League and Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League. Following a brief stint at South Florida as an assistant coach, Mayotte took over at NCAA Division II Eckerd College in 1978, where he guided the Tritons to 437 victories over 13 seasons and was a two-time Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year (1980, 1981).
In addition to his selection to the Troy Baseball Hall of Fame, Mayotte is a member of the Glens Fall Area, New York State Baseball and Eckerd College Hall of Fame. Close to 100 of Mayotte's former players were selected in the MLB Draft, including former MLB stars Jeff Bagwell and Albert Belle.
