BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Trojan's Track and field team wrapped up a successful weekend of competition as junior Edita Sklenska set a new school record in the women's 600m at the UAB Blazer Invitational on Friday, and 18 Trojans collected top-five finishes at the UAB Vulcan Invitational on Saturday from the Birmingham CrossPlex.
"We had a pretty good showing over the past two days," the director of track and field, Marc Davis, said. "We were led by Edita Sklenska, who picked up right where she left off last year. We had many personal records, which gives us a lot of confidence going into the future. We have a young team. With a young team comes growing pains. Our athletes can't dwell on negative or great performances to be successful. Each week is a new week, and we have to have a short memory. We had many personal bests, but the best has certainly yet to come."
Sklenska got things started on Friday as she set a new school record in the women's 600m, finishing with a time of 1:31.47, good enough for third place. The previous record in the event was 1:33.72, which was set in 2019 by Tiarra Bailey.
Alan Johnson, the Jackson State transfer, set a new personal record in the men 1000m crossing the finish line in the top 10 with a time of 2:36.93, which was five seconds faster than his previous personal record.
Maya Kelly also set a new personal record in the women's 300m with a time of 40.92 to close things out for the Trojans on Friday afternoon.
Troy carried their momentum into the Vulcan invitational on Saturday afternoon as Julian Martin Rodgers placed first in the men's 60m hurdles finishing in 8.14 seconds, and Sklenska was able to build off her record set on Friday and take home first place in the women's 400m with a top time of 56.52
10 other Trojans were able to secure top-five finishes across 10 events as Alex Robinson placed fourth in the men's 200m dash, Chance Armstrong finished fifth in the men's 800m, and Bennett Brake had a 4:30.77 mile run which put him in fourth.
Two of the top five finishes in men's shotput were Trojans as Javon Osbourn and Nash Rutledge took home second and fourth place. Samara Nelson had a 15.98m throw in the women's weight throw to round out the top five.
Abby Grosinske in the women's shot put placed fifth with a throw of 12.60m, and the women's triple jump was the Trojans second event, with two Trojans finishing in the top five with Amber Gordan in fourth with a jump of 11.34m and Camryn Pettus finishing directly behind her in fifth at 11.17m.
The Trojan men and women 4x400 meter relay teams finished the day with top-five finishes. For the men, Jordan McCleskey, Alan Johnson, Alex Robinson, and Chance Armstrong got third with a time of 3:18.48. Sklenska, Maya Kelly, Reagan McCall, and Donisha Jeanty got fifth in the women portion of the event finishing with a time of 3:55.56.
Up Next: Troy will head back to Birmingham for the third time this season to take part in the Samford Multi on January 20 and 21, as well as the Carolina Challenge in Columbia, South Carolina, on January 21 and 22.
