TROY, Ala. – Troy freshman defensive end Javon Solomon has been named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week following a historic effort this past weekend in Troy's victory at Southern Miss, the league office announced Monday.
Solomon, a native of Tallahassee, Fla., had one of the best games in Sun Belt history as he led a Troy defensive unit that posted a dominant performance in the Trojans' 21-9 win over the Golden Eagles. He recorded nine tackles, five tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks as Troy held Southern Miss to 156 yards of total offense and only 46 yards in the second half.
His 3.5 sacks are the second-most in the country this season and the most by a player against an FBS opponent, while ranking as the 10th most in Sun Belt history and second most in Troy history. In addition, Solomon's five tackles for loss are second nationally this season, a half tackle for loss off the Sun Belt record and the most in Troy history. Solomon is the fifth player nationally since 2017 to record at least nine tackles, five tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks in a game and is the first player in Sun Belt history to do so.
Troy's defense held Southern Miss to just three points in the game, which came on the game's opening drive. Troy has allowed just 27 defensive points this season, which is its fewest through three games since 1997. Southern Miss' 156 yards of total offense were the fewest allowed by Troy against an FBS opponent since Arkansas recorded 125 yards against the Trojans in 2002.
Led by Solomon's effort, Troy finished with 16 tackles for loss as a team, the second-most in a game in Troy's DI history, while the nine team sacks are tied for the most in the school's FBS history. The Trojans last had nine sacks against Georgia Southern in 2019.
Troy opens Sun Belt Conference play this weekend with a trip to ULM; kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and ESPN+ will carry the broadcast.
