TROY, Ala. – Freshman right-hander Garrett Gainous joined an illustrious group in Troy baseball as he was named to the Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-America Team, the publication announced Wednesday.
Gainous becomes the 60th All-American in program history, and 2021 marks the fourth straight season – and sixth time in the last eight years – a Trojan has earned Freshman All-America honors.
"Garrett established himself quickly as one of our best pitchers in the fall," head coach Mark Smartt said. "He was consistent throughout the season, which is a sign of his poise and maturity as a young pitcher. He deserves this type of award and is poised to have a great career at Troy."
Gainous, the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, finished the season 9-5 with a 4.66 ERA with 83 strikeouts and just 36 walks in 83 innings of work all while holding opponents to a .248 batting average. His nine victories were the most in the country by a freshman starter, while his 83 strikeouts led league freshmen and ranked seventh overall in the conference. The Cairo, Ga., native sat down 29 batters looking, the second most in the Sun Belt.
Gainous tallied seven quality starts and posted a 4.04 ERA during the regular season, beginning in the Saturday slot before eventually moving to Friday nights in mid-April. In his first Friday start, he allowed just two hits in seven shutout innings against Georgia State. Gainous followed that performance with his second consecutive scoreless outing behind seven strikeouts and just two walks while only allowing three hits against App State.
At one point during the season, Gainous logged a shutout streak of 16.1 innings, the longest by a Trojan since Levi Thomas in 2020.
