JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Three Trojans competed in day one action at the NCAA East Preliminary Championships Wednesday in Jacksonville, Fla. Matthew Likely highlighted the day by advancing to Friday's 200m quarterfinals with a third-place finish in his first-round heat.

Likely, competing in his second consecutive NCAA regional, was fourth coming down the stretch but closed strong to overtake the heat's third automatic qualifying spot with a time of 20.88.

"Matthew raced himself into the next round in an extremely tight race. He had the No. 1 competitor in the world in his heat and he didn't shy away. The next round for him comes Friday and I hope to report about going to Oregon."

Two throwers also competed on day one with Michael Alvernaz in the hammer throw and Cole Stewart in the javelin. Alvernaz placed 19^th in his event with a mark of 63.31m while Stewart finished 25^th in the javelin with a throw of 64.18m.

Gemma Finch and Edita Sklenska are the only two Trojans slotted for day two action. The pair will run in the 800m Thursday at 6:50 p.m.
