LAFAYETTE, La. – Troy dropped the regular season finale against Louisiana in the third one-run game of the series. The Trojans struck first in the game, but ultimately fell in a pitcher's duel, 2-1, Saturday evening at Russo Park.
Caleb Bartolero, representing the tying run, singled to lead off the ninth and was lifted for Hudson Hartsfield who entered to pinch run. Dalton Sinquefield laid down a beautiful sac bunt to move Hartsfield into scoring position, but a pair of strikeouts ended the game.
Drew Frederic homered on the first pitch of the game, his second longball of the series and the 11th of the season. Frederic recorded his second multi-hit game of the weekend and the 21st of the season.
Bay Witcher was excellent, allowing only two runs and striking out two in six innings. Witcher induced 12 ground outs in the game and, at one point, retired seven consecutive batters via ground out. Max Newton and Marquez Oates each tossed a scoreless inning of relief.
Louisiana (30-22, 13-11 SBC) drew even in the bottom of the third aided by a leadoff double and a sac bunt.
Troy (27-24, 13-11 SBC) squandered a quality scoring chance in the sixth after it placed runners on the corners with one out, but a strikeout followed by a fly out ended the frame. Louisiana took the lead on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the seventh.
Frederic reached with one out in the eighth when Rigsby Mosley hit a ball down the first base line that appeared to tail foul, but the umpire ruled it a fair ball and the Cajun first baseman stepped on the bag to record the inning-ending putout.
Troy's ninth-inning rally came up short, tagging Witcher (5-4) with a tough loss on the mound. Dane Dixon (3-0) earned the win on the hill for the Cajuns.
Quotable – Head coach Mark Smartt
"It was a tough loss today. Bay Witcher was really, really good, the bullpen was good and we played a clean game defensively. Give them credit. This was as good of competition as you'll see in this league. This is why you sign up to play college baseball. There was a lot on the line and a lot of things going on today around the league. Both teams went after each other today. I'm proud of our guys because they put everything they had into it and as a baseball coach that's all you can ask for."
