Troy enters the series tied with Georgia Southern for second place in the Sun Belt East Division but holds the tiebreaker via its series win over the Eagles in mid-March. The Trojans need to match or beat Georgia Southern's record in the final weekend of the season to retain the No. 2 seed in next week's conference tournament.
Troy is 10-3 in its last 13 games and has won eight of its last nine conference games. The Trojans have won three consecutive league series entering the final week of the regular season.
Two of the Sun Belt's premiere arms will duke it out on the mound Thursday night in Troy's Garrett Gainous and Louisiana's Spencer Arrighetti. The pair rank first and second, respectively, in wins among Sun Belt pitchers. Gainous is just one of two freshman in the nation with at least eight victories while Arrighetti, a sophomore, has seven on the year.
Marquez Oates has emerged as one of the league's best closers with a 3-1 record and seven saves, tied for the second-most in the conference. Oates has a 1.80 ERA and 40 strikeouts compared to 10 walks in 30.0 innings this year and opposing batters are hitting .171 against him.
One key to Troy's success over the last 13 games has been the production from the bottom of the order. The 7-8-9 holes have hit at a .346 clip and have an OBP of .432 over the stretch. The bottom third of the order has scored 31 of 80 runs in Troy's last 13 games.
