Extra-Base Hits Power Trojans Past Red Wolves
5/14/2021 10:43:00 PM | Baseball
Troy has won seven consecutive league games for the first time since 2011, when the Trojans won eight straight. Half of the Trojans' hits went for extra bases in Troy's second-straight game of scoring at least 10 runs.
Logan Cerny and Rigsby Mosley tripled in back-to-back at-bats while Nic Nolan logged two doubles as part of a three-hit, two-RBI night. Drew Frederic hit a three-run bomb while Caleb Bartolero blasted a solo shot in the fifth, their ninth and fourth home runs on the season, respectively.
Eight of nine starters hit safely in the win while all nine scored a run. Clay Stearns reached via walk three times and scored on each occasion.
Garrett Gainous (8-4) didn't have his best stuff in his fifth Friday night start but settled in after surrendering a pair of early runs. The freshman tied his season high with 10 strikeouts, compared to just one walk, and left the game with the lead to earn his eighth win of the season. Gainous is now 6-1 as a starter within the friendly confines of Riddle-Pace.
Max Newton has taken kindly to his role out of the bullpen recently. The lefty faced the heart of the Red Wolves' order and struck out two while not surrendering a run in two innings. Pettys entered to close the game in the ninth and worked around some trouble to keep Arkansas State off the board.
Red Wolves starter Brandon Hudson (4-2) suffered his second defeat of the season after surrendering five runs on seven hits. Four bullpen arms behind him walked five and allowed seven runs on five hits.
Quotable – Head coach Mark Smartt
"It was a really good Friday night win for our team. Garrett was good and limited damage when he had to; [Arkansas State] is a good hitting ball club. I thought we did some things with the bat; we scored in six of our eight innings and had a few extra-base hits. It's always good to start a series with a win, but we've still got work to do the rest of the weekend.
