TROY, Ala. -- Senior hammer specialist Michael Alvernaz and mid-distance runner Gemma Finch have earned Men's Field Athlete of the Week and Female Track Athlete of the Week, the Sun Belt Conference announced Thursday afternoon.
A native of Barrington, R.I., Alvernaz recorded another career performance for the Trojans on Friday in the hammer event. The throw specialist turned in a school record 66.13m winning the hammer event for the third time this season.
Â
"Mike works hard and has a very no-nonsense approach to his craft," Director of Track and Field Marc Davis said. "He has goals he wants to achieve and is checking them off as the season advances. He is expecting more big performances to come and we are looking forward to him achieving his goals."
Â
Troy's second honoree, Finch, won the 800m on Saturday, finishing in just 2:06.71. The time was nearly four seconds quicker than Finch's previous school record. The senior has now recorded three consecutive victories in the 800m and won the 1500m event at the Jaguar Opener back on Mar. 5.
Â
"Gemma has been as consistent as any runner can be over the past couple of years," Davis said. "She's been working hard and overcoming barriers race after race and it is great to see her recognized for her efforts. I am proud to see how she's developed."
Â
The Trojans return to action this weekend for the Crimson Tide Invitational hosted by the University of Alabama. The three-day meet kicks off today and continues Friday and Saturday. The Trojans begin competiting tomorrow afternoon. Live results will be available on Prime-Time Timing or by clicking here. Friday and Saturday's events will be live streamed on SEC Network +.
