PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. – Weather was a major factor on Saturday as the Troy men's tennis team fell to South Alabama by a score of 4-1 in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Tournament.
With rain in the forecast for most of the day, Troy's originally scheduled start of 1 p.m. was delayed until 2:15 p.m. Troy and South Alabama were able to get things started on the outdoor courts as most of the rain had cleared the area in time for the match to start.
Playing outside was big for the Trojans in doubles action on Saturday. Troy got things started with an impressive 6-0 shutout victory from the duo of Amer Bedwan And Carles Anton. The pair, who won their ninth doubles match on court three, was dominant from start to finish and gave the Trojans the early advantage. After South won on court one, it all came down to Pelayo Antuna and Manuel Bernard on court two. Antuna, who was coming off an impressive three set win in singles on Friday, needed to dig deep once again to win the doubles point. Antuna and Bernard didn't flinch as they duo was able to get their match to a tiebreak, eventually winning the tiebreak and clinching the doubles point for Troy.
When singles play got start the matches were being played outside. Troy built a lead in the first set on a couple of courts when the rain started to fall forcing the match to be delayed and moved to the indoor courts. Once indoors, South Alabama seemed to find a spark and everything began to go their way as they won four straight matches on courts one, three, four and five to clinch the match and advance in the tournament.
Troy ends its season with a 20-4 record, the programs first 20-win season since 2015.
