Troy Drops Game Two Against Texas State
4/10/2021 7:55:00 PM | Baseball
TROY, Ala. – Troy fell in a chippy contest against Texas State on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field. Runs were at a premium in the middle game of the series, but the Trojans finished 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position as the Bobcats clinched the weekend with a 3-1 victory.
Drew Frederic extended his career-long on-base streak to 39 games with a 2-for-4 day at the plate, his 15th multi-hit game of the season.
After allowing three runs in the first four innings, the Trojan arms held the Bobcats scoreless for five consecutive frames to close the game, but the bats were unable to get hot.
Garrett Gainous (4-3) logged his third quality start of the year after he threw 6.0 innings, allowed three runs and struck out five. DJ Wilkinson tossed 2.2 scoreless innings and fanned three in a strong relief role while Max Newton retired the only batter he faced in the ninth.
Texas State plated a pair of runs on three hits in the second inning to strike first, but Troy immediately responded in the bottom half of the inning. The Trojans capitalized on two Bobcat errors as Nic Nolan raced home from first base on a throwing error by the third baseman.
Dalton Shuffield homered to put Texas State up by two in the fourth inning. Brady Sherrill walked and Frederic laid down a beautiful bunt single to place two runners aboard with no outs in the fifth, but both were left stranded.
Garrett Herrmann (4-0) remained unbeaten on the year after throwing 120 pitches in a 7.0 inning, 12-strikeout effort for the Bobcats. Cameron Bush notched his first-career save with a four-strikeout performance.
Quotable – Head Coach Mark Smartt
"It was not a good day today. We didn't swing the bats very well and couldn't get anything going offensively. Our kids pitched really well; Gainous, Wilkinson and Newton all did the best they could to give us a chance to win. It was another disappointing day. We have to find a way to get that next hit, that next run. We're not stringing enough good at-bats together to win games."
