AUBURN, Ala. – A late game offensive spark for the Tigers pushed Auburn past Troy, 8-1, in the opening day of the Auburn Invitational Thursday at Jane B. Moore Field.
Â
Troy (13-4) hopped on the board first in the top of the third when Kelly Horne blasted a long ball over the left field wall, her third of the season.
Â
Auburn's (11-1) Makenna Dowell answered for the Tigers with a two-run long ball of her own in the bottom half of the frame.
Â
Back-to-back singles by Katie Lively and Candela Figueroa put runners in scoring position for the Trojans in the top of fourth, but Troy stranded the runners falling in order.
Â
After Lindsey Garcia singled to kick start the Tigers' offense, a walk and a dropped third strike loaded the bases for Justus Perry. Perry hit an infield single to plate the first of two runs. Dowell followed with a sacrifice fly to cap off the inning.
After a scoreless fifth frame, Auburn capitalized on four hits and an error to score four runs and solidify the victory.
Â
Shelby Lowe (3-0) earned the win after entering in relief in the fourth inning. Lowe threw 3.1 hitless innings and fanned seven batters to secure her third win of the season.
Â
Brianna Bailey (2-1) suffered her first loss of the season after allowing four hits and a pair of runs.
