The Trojan bats have commonly stolen the headlines in recent years, but Troy's pitching staff is off to a terrific start in 2021. Troy is coming off a weekend in which it only allowed two earned runs in three games against Jacksonville.
The Trojans have a 2.38 ERA this season, the best mark in the Sun Belt. Troy's relief pitchers have inherited a total of eight base runners this season and allowed just one to score, while retiring 15 of their 19 first batters faced.
The staff has managed to work out of most of the trouble it has faced so far this year. Opponents are hitting .162 with runners in scoring position and are 0-for-6 with the bases loaded.
Kyle Gamble (0-0) is expected to make is second start on the mound for the Trojans. The lefty struck out six and allowed one earned run in five innings against UAB last week.
Offensively, Troy continues to use an abundance of extra-base hits to produce runs. Nearly half of the Trojans' 76 hits this year have gone for extra bases. Troy is third nationally with 23 doubles on the year.
Troy has used its speed to its advantage on the base paths, having only been caught stealing one time in 14 attempts. Drew Frederic leads the Trojans with five stolen bags on the year.
