TROY, Ala. – True freshman Garrett Gainous pitched a gem in his second career start, striking out 10 in 6.2 innings as Troy clinched a series victory over Jacksonville Saturday at Riddle-Pace Field. The Dolphins struck first, but the Trojans scored eight unanswered runs to win, 8-1.
Gainous (2-0) allowed no earned runs and just three hits in his outing while Rigsby Mosley continued his impressive series with his second consecutive two-double game. Caleb Bartolero had his best game of his season with a single, double and two RBIs.
The pitchers battled early with three scoreless innings aside to open the game. Jacksonville (0-6) struck first in the top of the fourth after Ruben Someillan reached on an error and scored four batters later. Gainous stranded a pair of runners in scoring position with his fifth strikeout of the game to limit the damage to a run.
Troy (6-1) had an answer in the bottom half of the inning after Mosley led off with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Caleb Bartolero hit a blooper to right with the bases loaded to put the Trojans in front, 3-1.
Dalton Sinquefield and Logan Cerny each walked to begin the bottom of the sixth inning, bringing William Sullivan up to bat. Sullivan put the ball in play and Sinquefield advanced home as the Dolphins attempted a double play, but committed a throwing error.
Nic Nolan led off the seventh inning before Mosley's second double of the game advanced him to third. Cerny then drove a line drive just out of the reach of the Dolphin's shortstop for his 10th and 11th RBIs of the year.
A double from Donovan Whibbs and a Dolphin throwing error scored Jesse Hall from first for Troy's eighth and final run of the game.
Mike Cassala (0-1) was tagged with the loss for Jacksonville after he allowed four runs on three hits in 5.1 innings.
Quotable – Head coach Mark Smartt
"It's always good to win a series on Saturday, I'm really proud of our team for getting after it. We didn't get off to the greatest start. Garrett Gainous was phenomenal to start and we eventually found a way to get some runs in. We're looking forward to tomorrow to try and get our first Sunday win."
On Garrett Gainous
"He was terrific. Everything about [his performance] was terrific. He maintained his poise and worked through some trouble when he had to when we led off with an error and they scraped it around. From that point on, I thought he was better. His stuff improved and I thought his execution got better."
