WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Despite a third-quarter surge, Troy Women's Basketball fell at Wake Forest, 90-61, Saturday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Amber Leggett led the Trojans (4-4) with 22 points. The junior also added 11 boards, good for her second double-double of the season.
Jewel Spear led all scorers with 30 points on 11-of-19 shooting, including six buckets from behind the arc.
How It Happened
Felmas Koranga kicked off the first period strong with a made jumper during Troy's first possession. The Trojans and Deacons battled toe-to-toe through the opening five minutes before a 14-2 run by Wake Forest gave them a 24-11 lead heading into the second period.
Again, the Trojans hopped on the board first with a fast break layup from Leggett, but a 12-2 run by the Deacons stretched their advantage to 20. After trading buckets throughout the two-minute mark, Wake Forest scored six of the final 10 points of the half to send the contest into the break at 50-28.
The Trojans closed the gap in the opening half of the third quarter, stringing together a 4-0 and 7-0 run, both of which were sparked by made buckets from Leggett. With just 1:40 left to go, Jada Walton sparked a 6-0 run with a three pointer, cutting Wake Forest's lead to 63-51 at the end of the period.
However, the Deacons opened up the final quarter of action on a 7-0 run to halt Troy's momentum. At the seven-minute mark, Koranga and Leggett combined for an 8-0 run to force a Wake Forest timeout, but the Deacons ultimately closed to game on a 10-0 stretch, setting up the 90-61 fianl.
