TROY, Ala. – Troy student-athletes were well represented at Troy University's Fall Commencement Exercises held Friday in Trojan Arena; 23 Troy student-athletes from six different programs had their degrees conferred.
Troy's 23 student-athletes joined some 725 students who received degrees Friday. Graduates represented 22 U.S. states and territories and nine countries outside the United States.
"Congratulations to all the Troy University students who graduated today and especially to the 23 student-athletes who earned their degrees," Troy Director of Athletics Brent Jones said. "Our number one goal as an athletics department is for our student-athletes to leave Troy with a degree in their hand. We couldn't be prouder of this group today, including five student-athletes who earned their master's degree."
Senior U.S. District Judge Keith Watkins delivered the keynote address to the graduates. Watkins was appointed Middle District of Alabama District Judge by Pres. George Bush in 2005 and was elevated to Chief District Judge in 2011. He assumed Senior Judge status in 2019.
A graduate of Auburn University and the University of Alabama School of Law, Watkins practiced law in Tuscaloosa for two years before returning to Troy, where he practiced for nearly three decades. He is a Fellow of the Alabama Law Foundation and served as the Bar Commissioner for the Twelfth Judicial Circuit and as a member of the Alabama State Bar Task Force for Alternative Dispute Resolution.
Watkins serves on the boards of the Frank M. Johnson Institute, the Rosa Parks Museum, the Federal Judges Association and the American Village. He and his wife have two children and five grandchildren.
