Â
TROY, Ala. – It will be a battle of unbeaten teams Friday at Riddle-Pace Field as Troy baseball kicks off a three-game series against Louisiana Tech at 6 p.m. First pitch for Saturday and Sunday's games are scheduled for 1 p.m. as the Trojans continue their nine-game homestand to begin the year.
Â
Troy (5-0) enters the series as one of the hottest-hitting teams in the country while Louisiana Tech (4-0) picked up two convincing wins over Louisiana on Opening Weekend.
Â
The Trojans boast one of the country's best lineups so far this season. Troy leads the country in doubles (29), hits (77) and runs (81) and rank in the top five in home runs (8), slugging percentage (.721) and team batting average (.421). Six starters in Troy's lineup have a batting average over .400 (William Sullivan, Rigsby Mosley, Caleb Bartolero, Dalton Sinquefield, Easton Kirk, Drew Frederic).
Â
Sullivan has had an impressive start to his college career. He is one of two players nationally to hit four doubles in a game this season. Sullivan went 5-5 and tied a school record with four doubles in Sunday's series finale against Northern Kentucky.
Â
Bartolero and Sinquefield are playing some of the best baseball of their careers. Bartolero hit a grand slam and leads the team with 13 RBIs while Sinquefield has at least one hit in each game this season and has five doubles on the year.
Â
Levi Thomas will make his second start of the season Friday night. The junior is coming off a career-high 14-strikeout performance on Opening Night where he fanned seven-straight batters to begin the game. Thomas raked in the weekly awards for the outing, earning Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week and Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week recognition.
Â
Orlando Ortiz will earn the start on Saturday after beginning his career 1-0 and striking out out seven against Northern Kentucky. Senior southpaw Max Newton, also 1-0 on the year, will be the Sunday starter.
Â
Quotable – Head Coach Mark Smartt
"It'll be a very good series. That's a good ball club coming into town. They've gotten off to an excellent start and are a regional-type team every year. We were fortunate to win two out of three last year in Ruston and we'll have our hands full again this year."
Â
SCOUTING LOUISIANA TECH
Pitching has been the name of the game early in the season for Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs have surrendered just five total runs in four games against Southeastern La., Louisiana, and McNeese. Sunday starter Jarret Whorff earned Conference USA Pitcher of the Week honors after throwing 6.1 scoreless innings against the Ragin' Cajuns, striking out 7 batters while allowing just 4 to reach base. Friday starter Jonathan Fincher already owns a spot in the Bulldogs' record book after setting a school record last season by striking out 14.20 batters per 9 innings.
